Preventable Blindness Reduction & Cataract Service Support
Imago supports cataract and other avoidable blindness programs through structured screening, referral coordination, surgical outreach collaboration, and post-operative follow-up systems. Our focus is to help partners improve access, quality, continuity of care, and surgical outcomes, especially in underserved communities.
OUR STORY
Our story and purpose
Imago began with a desire to build more of the local capacity that quality eye care in Tanzania depends on. For our founder, this includes the ability to produce essential ophthalmic supplies and to make structured learning and mentorship more consistently available.
Learning about Balanced Salt Solution (BSS) during ophthalmology training, without the opportunity to use it, raised questions about access to essential surgical supplies. Seeing patients sometimes wait for surgery because consumables were unavailable made the question more urgent: why could we not produce these supplies ourselves? This became the starting point for Imago’s local manufacturing vision.
Brief opportunities for structured learning through TanzanEye, the Moran group and Eyecorp demonstrated the value of focused teaching and supportive mentorship. Two months of mentored surgical training at Aravind Eye Hospital in India strengthened both ambitions: to make sustained learning more accessible and to build dependable local supply capacity. The experience showed how reliable resources, organised services and consistent mentorship can support efficient care, confident professionals and a deeper commitment to ophthalmology. It also highlighted the importance of supporting local mentors who balance substantial clinical workloads with many trainees.
Training community health workers with TanzanEye and DOCCAT demonstrated the value of community engagement in primary eye care. Practical education and referral connections can help people recognise eye problems, seek care earlier and reach appropriate services.
